About Canary Sail

With 20 years experience in the Canaries, we can offer an unrivalled range of RYA Practical Sailing Courses in the exquisite tidal waters of the Western Canary Islands. We also have sailing yachts 36ft to 52ft available for bareboat or skippered charter from our Tenerife South base.

Our RYA Sailing School is based in Tenerife South, San Miguel Marina near Tenerife South airport (airport code is TFS). Tenerife is served by many airlines from most UK and International airports, including Newark, USA.

Bareboat and Skippered Charter is offered from our Tenerife South base.

The Canary Islands have a sub-tropical climate that provides ideal sailing conditions and the sun is nearly always shining.

All our Instructors join us from a professional background and have moved to this alternative lifestyle to work with Canary Sail. Most live here permanently and are committed to delivering quality, safe training in a fun atmosphere so that you our clients leave us with a qualification of value, new friends and an intention to return – many do! Our Chief Instructor’s program of continuous in-house instructor training ensures continuity – whether you return one day or choose to stay for a number of weeks, quality of instruction and delivery of your course will remain consistent.

Chavdar Kateliev

Chief Instructor

Choko was introduced to sailing as a teenager by his close relative, Vasil Kurtev, a famous sailor.

He continued windsurfing and dinghy sailing, beginning to sail in local races in the Canary Islands and later joining the RYA scheme to complete his instructor certificate.

Choko is a Yachtmaster and shore based instructor.

Currently Chokos son, Viktor, is in the Spanish entry-Olympic team in ILCA7.

Eddy Coenen

Yachtmaster Instructor

Eddy is a very enthusiastic and experienced professional instructor who owned a highly successful RYA Training Centre in Belgium for 11 years, delivering courses in both Sail and Power. He sold the business in 2012 and moved, with his wife, to La Gomera to teach sailing in the Canarian sunshine. Not only is Eddy a Yachtmaster Ocean Instructor for both Sail and Power but he is also qualified to teach Power Boat Level 2, VHF/ SRC, ISAF, Sea Survival, First Aid, Diesel Engine, Astro Navigation and PPR.

Lorenzo Boreatti

Yachtmaster Instructor

Lorenzo started his sailing life when he was a little kid and it was love at first sight for him with the ocean and the little dinghy he was sailing.
At the age of 15 he became a dinghy instructor and that has been his passion and job since.
Lorenzo is now a skipper, a racer and a Yachtmaster instructor, still in love with life at sea and still very passionate about sharing his knowledge and experience.

Mike Zimmermann

Yachtmaster Instructor

Mike has been sailing all his life, be it with his family on one of their many trips around the world, the North Sea, the Med or the English Channel. Growing up in Switzerland he is also an avid snowboarder and loves all things outdoors. Mike currently lives between London and his boat in La Gomera.

Bart Pintelon

Cruising Instructor

Bart started sailing open keelboats in Holland at age 16 just over the border of his native Belgium. After a short stint as instructor a few years later, until the age of 23, he picked up sailing again 15 years later.

After studying accountancy and working 6 months in an office, he started truck driving throughout Europe for the next 26 years.

In 2019 he decided to expand the horizon to contain more water.

As cruising instructor with his own yacht “Alfados”, he keeps building up the mileage on the cruise weeks.

Jesus Blanco

Cruising Instructor

Jesús is a Spanish sailor who started dinghy sailing as a teenager, and later in life while living in the north of Spain he raced on sailing yachts and studied to get the spanish qualifications. Not satisfied with that, he decided to go for the RYA training and got his Yachtmaster Offshore here, with Canary Sail, becoming a cruising instructor a year later and coming back to teach on the very same boats in which he used to train and study

Michele Giordano

Cruising Instructor

Michele, originally from Italy, moved to the UK at a young age and over there he started his RYA training and has been sailing since.

After many years in London, he now spends his time, and his sailing, between the Canaries and Croatia where he also teaches RYA Power and Sail courses

Andrea Lee

Admin & Accounting

Andrea has many years of work experience in Customer Service, Administration and Accountancy. Wanting a better style of living she moved from the UK to La Gomera with her partner in 2006 and has not looked back since.

She is always happy to offer help and answer any queries you may have.

Joy Mitchell

Head of Housekeeping

Joy would prefer to describe herself as a ‘Girl Friday’! She says there is not enough time to write her a job description!

She moved to Tenerife 12 years ago, on a sabbatical from teaching science and subsequently stayed! Earlier careers included Banking and Nursing as well as working with family and running her own businesses.

She is the welcoming face when you arrive to our Tenerife base and always on hand to provide information and help to make your sailing holiday perfect.

Ian Atkins

Maintenance

Ian has lived in Tenerife for 26 years now, he was in the restaurant business for most of that time. Ian then decided to take up sailing 5yrs ago, taking a sailing course with canary sail. Since then, Ian started helping out on a Saturday and is now working with the maintenance team full time

Darrin Lee

Maintenance

Darrin and his partner, Andrea, came to La Gomera on holiday in the early 2000’s and having fallen in love with the island (are you seeing a theme running through a number of these profiles?!), they upped sticks and travelled, with their Land Rover from the UK to have a year off!  They never left.  Darrin has a talent for getting things done and finding the right way to do them.  A carpenter and keen shotgun enthusiast, Darrin brings his skills (and of course, tools) to Canary Sail.
