What does Canary Sail offer?

Sailing Courses, Fastrack Yachtmaster Offshore programs, mile building Cruises and Charter with or without skipper

Which destination/base should I choose?

Tenerife base for Saturday to Saturday – Courses, Cruising and Charter – convenient 15 mins taxi run from TFS (Tenerife South) airport

La Gomera base for Friday to Friday – Courses, Cruising and Charter – a taste of local Canaries. 20 mins taxi run followed by a 1 hour ferry transfer – worth the extra to get off the beaten track!

Sicily base for Saturday to Saturday – Charter only – cruising around the most beautiful location and Aeolian Islands in this wonderful are of the Med

How many days & nights will I/we stay on board?

In a week with Canary Sail you will complete 6 days of sailing and 7 nights on board

What weather can I expect?

Canary Islands is consistently fine with no great range of temperature through the year. Around 28 degrees in summer and low to mid 20´s during winter months. Evenings can be cooler so a fleece/jacket is advised. Low humidity so insect count is low! Good winds!

How do I book a Cruise or Charter?

Select product at top of our home page. Select duration of Cruise/Charter. Proceed to Calendar and select available date

Which RYA Course should I choose?

See “Choosing the right RYA Course for you” here

How do I gain the RYA navigational theory knowledge required?

Sometimes we can arrange classroom theory training. More often clients choose the Splash on line tuition – see here. It is also possible to self learn using books and YouTube RYA classroom videos!

How do I book a practical sailing course?

Currently this is not yet possible on-line as with Cruise and Charter. For availability and on-line payment Contact us

Can I book my own cabin?

Yes! Subject to availability we guarantee you your own cabin for 1 or 2 persons at time of booking

How many others will be on board?

On 36ft yachts max of 4 plus Instructor, 40ft+ 4 sometime 5 plus Instructor (Instructor/Skipper takes the saloon!)

Can we book our own Exclusive Yacht for a Course or Cruise?

Yes, and many do! Minimum number is 2 and max 5 (Course) or up to 9 (cruise 50ft)

What miles will we cover and how many ports will we visit with Canary Sail?

Courses – in excess of 100NM visiting min 3 other ports

Cruises – 200 to 300NM + visiting 4/5 ports

Can I swim off the yacht?

Yes, with the yacht secured at anchor, swimming and lunch is on the agenda!

Can I fish off the yacht?

No, for this you need a special license. Canary Sail is licensed to sail only

Can we whale/Dolphin watch?

We will see the whales and dolphins but are forbidden to follow them without the required license

What airport do I fly to?

Tenerife Base: Tenerife South (TFS) airport (TFN an option)
La Gomera Base: Tenerife South (TFS) airport (TFN an option)

Sicily: Palermo airport (Catania an option)

How do I get from the airport to my chosen sailing base?

Tenerife Base: Take a taxi from the airport direct to marina San Miguel, approx. 15 minutes
La Gomera: Take a taxi from the airport to the harbour in Los Cristianos, where you will catch a ferry to San Sebastian, La Gomera.

Sicily: Bus & Train or we arrange collection/drop off for you

What time is check in?

Tenerife base: Latest check in 17.00 (Charter), 18.00 (Course)
La Gomera base: We advise you book a flight that lands no later than 17.00, in order to catch the last ferry from Los Cristianos to San Sebastian, La Gomera

Will I be met on arrival?

La Gomera – We meet you from the ferry in San Sebastian and take you to your yacht

Tenerife – We meet you at the San Miguel Marina

Sicily – We meet you at the airport (by special arrangement) or at the Capo de Orlando Marina

Can I leave my bag if arriving earlier than check in?

We will take bags and suggest what to do while waiting for your yacht to be ready

Can I have early access to the marina facilities?

We/the marina office will provide a key against a refundable deposit of €5.00 for use for the duration of your visit

Are the marinas secure?

The marinas are secured by CCTV, locked pontoons and 24 hour patrolling. Generally crime in the Canaries is not an issue 

If I stay for more than a week, do the marinas have laundry facilities?

Yes, in all cases the marinas provide a launderette for washing and drying. We do not allow drying of clothing on the yachts! 

What time is check out?

All bases: We kindly ask you to vacate the yacht by 09.30 on the day of departure

What should I pack?

Sunglasses
Sun cream (not oil please)
Deck shoes or trainers with a non-marking sole (flip flops are not to be worn on board)
Sailing gloves
Shorts
T shirts
Fleece or jumper for evenings
Light jacket for winter months
Soft bag as opposed to a hard case
Long sleeved shirt if you need to cover up in the sun
Baseball/sun hat (preferably with a clip to stop it blowing over board
Sea sickness tablets should you need them
Holiday insurance to include sailing in territorial waters
Copies of your sailing qualifications (Charterers only)
Credit card for payment of security deposit (Charterers only)

How should I pack?

A soft suitcase or bag is preferable, as they are easier to store on board than a hard case

Provisions for light meals, snacks and soft drinks (when completing a booking form, you will be asked if you have any food allergies)
RYA qualified instructor
Wet weather gear (unlikely to be needed)
Safety gear, including auto life jacket and safety harness

Diesel, gas and marina fees
Bed linen & towels
Accommodation on board the yacht for the duration of your course

Can I hire wet weather gear?

Wet weather gear is included for RYA courses and cruises. Charterers can hire wet weather gear if required

Is on-board safety equipment included?

Auto inflate life jackets and safety harnesses are included

Is there bed linen on board?

Yes, bed linen is included for RYA courses and cruises. Charterers can pay bed linen per person per week if required

Do you provide towels?

Yes, we supply bath towels, but not beach towels

Am I insured for personal injury whilst on board?

Please ensure your holiday insurance also covers you for sailing in territorial waters – see here if not 

What happens in the event that I need to cancel my booking?

What charter qualifications do I need?

Bareboat charterers will need to hold an ICC or equivalent

Do I need to pay a security deposit?

Bareboat charterers will be required to pay a refundable security deposit
