What does Canary Sail offer?

Sailing Courses, Fastrack Yachtmaster Offshore programs, mile building Cruises and Charter with or without skipper

What is a typical Course/Cruise week itinerary?

Saturday – Arrive at our base by 17.00, where you will meet your skipper and crew mates and be settled on board. 
Sunday – Your Course/Cruise will depart in the morning and will continue through to Friday afternoon.
Friday – Your Course/Cruise will return to base in the afternoon. 
Saturday – Clients are kindly asked to be ready to leave the yacht by 09.00. 

Which destination/base should I choose?

Tenerife base for Saturday to Saturday – Courses, Cruising and Charter – convenient 15 mins taxi run from TFS (Tenerife South) airport

La Gomera base – currently unavailable!

However, we will sail you there from our Tenerife base.

How many days & nights will I/we stay on board?

In a week with Canary Sail you will complete 6 days of sailing and stay 7 nights on board

What weather can I expect?

Canary Islands is consistently fine with no great range of temperature through the year. Around 28 degrees in summer and low to mid 20´s during winter months. Evenings can be cooler so a fleece/jacket is advised. Low humidity so insect count is low! Good winds!

How do I gain the RYA navigational theory knowledge required?

Sometimes we can arrange classroom theory training. More often clients choose the Splash on line tuition – see here. It is also possible to self learn using books and YouTube RYA classroom videos!

How do I book a practical sailing course?

Currently this is not yet possible on-line as with Cruise and Charter. For availability and on-line payment Contact us

Can I book my own cabin?

Yes! Subject to availability we guarantee you your own cabin for 1 or 2 persons at time of booking

How many others will be on board?

On 36ft yachts max of 4 plus Instructor, 40ft+ 4 sometime 5 plus Instructor (Instructor/Skipper takes the saloon!)

Can we book our own Exclusive Yacht for a Course or Cruise?

Yes, and many do! Minimum number is 2 and max 5 (Course) or up to 9 (Cruise Mono hull 50ft or Catamaran 38)

What miles will we cover and how many ports will we visit with Canary Sail?

Courses – in excess of 120NM visiting min 3 other ports

Cruises – 250 to 350NM + visiting 4/5 ports

Can I swim off the yacht?

Yes, with the yacht secured at anchor, swimming and lunch is on the agenda!

Can I fish off the yacht?

No, for this you need a special license. Canary Sail is licensed to sail only

Can we whale/Dolphin watch?

We will see the whales and dolphins but are forbidden to follow them without the required license

What airport do I fly to?

Tenerife Base: Tenerife South (TFS) airport (TFN an option)

 

How do I get from the airport to my chosen sailing base?

Tenerife Base: Take a taxi from the airport direct to marina San Miguel, approx. 15 minutes

 

What time is check in?

Tenerife base: Latest check in 17.00 

 

Will I be met on arrival?

Tenerife – We meet you in  the San Miguel Marina at 17.00 on the Saturday you arrive

Can I leave my bag if arriving earlier than check in?

We can no longer accept early arrivals to the marina or store baggage. Please arrive to the marina at the appointed check in time of 17.00 and your yacht will be ready

Can I have my own key to the marina facilities?

On your arrival we can provide a key card against a refundable deposit of €10.00 for use for the duration of your visit. 

Are the marinas secure?

The marinas are secured by CCTV, locked pontoons and 24 hour patrolling. Generally crime in the Canaries is not an issue

If I stay for more than a week, do the marinas have laundry facilities?

Yes, in all cases the marinas provide a launderette for washing and drying. We do not allow drying of clothing on the yachts!

What time is check out?

We kindly ask you to vacate the yacht by 09.00 on the Saturday of departure

What should I pack?

  • Sunglasses
  • Sun cream (not oil please)
  • Deck shoes or trainers with a non-marking sole (flip flops are not to be worn on board)
  • Sailing gloves
  • Shorts
  • Polo shirts
  • Fleece or jumper for evenings
  • Light jacket for winter months
  • Soft bag as opposed to a hard case
  • Long sleeved shirt if you need to cover up in the sun
  • Baseball/sun hat (preferably with a clip to stop it blowing over board
  • Sea sickness tablets should you need them
  • Holiday insurance to include sailing in territorial waters
  • Passport photo (Skipper Courses, SRC Radio Exams, Yachtmaster Exams)
  • Copies of your sailing qualifications (Charterers only)
  • Credit card for payment of security deposit (Charterers only)

How should I pack?

A soft suitcase or bag is preferable, as they are easier to store on board than a hard case

  • Own cabin option
  • Provisions for light meals – breakfast & lunch, snacks and soft drinks. Evening meals are taken ashore (when completing a booking form, you will be asked if you have any food allergies)
  • Experienced RYA qualified instructor
  • Safety gear, including auto life jacket and safety harness
  • Diesel, gas and marina fees
  • Bed linen & towels
  • Accommodation on board the yacht for the duration of your course
  • Welcome drinks on arrival

What’s included in my cruise?

  • Own cabin
  • Provisions for light meals, cooking meals on board during night sailing, snacks and soft drinks (when completing a booking form, you will be asked if you have any food allergies)
  • Experienced RYA qualified instructor/skipper
  • Safety gear, including auto life jacket and safety harness
  • Diesel, gas and marina fees
  • Bed linen & towels (not for the beach!)
  • Accommodation on board the yacht for the duration of your cruise
  • Around 250NM+ (Western) 350NM (Eastern) with 60NM YM qualifying passages for those interested
  • Sail tuition & coaching under way
  • Welcome drinks on arrival

Can I hire wet weather gear?

Wet weather gear is not included. Clients can hire wet weather gear if required – cost €20 pp/week

Is on-board safety equipment included?

Auto inflate life jackets and safety harnesses are included on all our yachts!

All sailing course yachts are fully equipped to the RYA safety requirements & recommendations.

Is there bed linen on board?

Yes, bed linen is included for RYA courses and cruises. Charterers pay bed linen & towels for €25 per person per week

Do you provide towels?

Yes, we supply bath and hand towels, but not beach towels!

Am I insured for personal injury whilst on board?

Yes! However, you should take out normal holiday insurance. Check your policy also covers you for leisure sailing in territorial waters – Pantaenius Insurance (for EU residents) or Topsail Insurance (for UK residents and those further afield)

What happens in the event that I need to cancel my booking?

What charter qualifications do I need?

Bareboat charterers should have at least Day Skipper (daytime sailing only!) or higher. We will take an account of your sailing experience. An ICC or equivalent is also preferable

Do I need to pay a security deposit?

Bareboat charterers will be required to pay a refundable security deposit
