If you’ve ever dreamed of learning to sail but feel overwhelmed by where to begin, you’re not alone. Many of our students at Canary Sail started with no experience at all. Building a sailing CV may sound like something only professionals need, but it’s a smart and structured way to show progress, unlock new opportunities, and stay focused on your long-term goals on the water.
Start with the basics
Every journey begins with that first step. Most new sailors begin with an RYA Competent Crew course. This five-day practical course teaches core sailing skills including sail handling, basic knots, safety procedures, and onboard etiquette. It’s your first entry on a sailing CV and the foundation for everything that follows.
At Canary Sail, Competent Crew is taught by experienced instructors on the tidal waters of the Canary Islands, giving your early training an edge straight away.
Move into skippering
After a few days on the water, many learners find their confidence building fast. The next logical step is the RYA Day Skipper, which qualifies you to skipper a yacht in familiar waters by day. Completing this includes both theory and practical components and allows you to begin skippering charters, often required for insurance and rental purposes.
At this stage, your sailing CV begins to take shape with a mix of qualifications and logged miles.
Fast track options
If your goal is to reach professional or Yachtmaster-level competence quickly, consider a Fast Track programme. These intensive training paths combine multiple courses, often over 12–14 weeks, and help you build a comprehensive CV from scratch. Canary Sail’s RYA Yachtmaster Offshore Fast Track programme is ideal for committed beginners who want to move fast and train in world-class conditions.
Keep logging miles
Your sailing CV isn’t just about certificates. Logged sea miles, night hours, and experience in different weather and sea states are crucial. We recommend keeping a formal logbook from day one. On Canary Sail courses, we help you track these milestones and build a solid portfolio recognised by charter companies, employers, and examiners. For multi week Fastrackers, we present you with an RYA logbook on arrival.
Add variety and advanced skills
As your confidence grows, so should your range of skills. Consider RYA Coastal Skipper, VHF certification, and specialised training like catamaran handling (by special arrangement) or exclusive-use tuition. These extras can set your CV apart.
Your CV, your journey
Whether you want to become a professional Yachtmaster or simply cruise with confidence, building a sailing CV is about structure, learning, and time on the water. Canary Sail is here to guide you every step of the way, offering expert training, a friendly team, and perfect year-round conditions in the Canary Islands.
